Hawkeyes, Pen and Paper.
Apparently, Clint has been on a real writing kick while Kate’s been
gone. It’s ridiculous, because who even uses pen and paper these days?
She tells Bobbi it’s ridiculous, when Bobbi drops the unfinished
letters that have been rescued from Clint’s apartment into Kate’s lap.
“There’s one for each of us. Jess, Natasha, you, and me,” Bobbi says,
and she gives the kind of smile that doesn’t reach past her nose when
she says, “If you ask me, I’m sure Steve’s letter was next on his
“Letters. Because talking is too complicated,” Kate says, more at the
sleeping and unconscious figure on the bed beside them than at Bobbi.
Bobbi just squeezes her shoulder and asks Kate if she wants anything
from the vending machine.
Vending machine coffee is completely fucking ridiculous - even more ridiculous than Clint Barton’s entire existence - and Kate is
in the middle of a rant about that when her voice gives out, and she
has to turn away from the woman whose mask Kate once wore because
cruddy coffee from a coffee vending machine is making Kate break down.
By the time that Kate has composed herself, Bobbi is no longer there,
and Kate’s only company is a still unconscious Clint Barton. His
breathing is steadier than hers, and Kate clings to that fact as she
sits down beside him and begins to read the letter he never sent.
Hawkeyes, All that I Have (or the a/u where Kate is the first Hawkeye)
[Trigger Warning: Discussion of sex-shaming and rape]
It’s entirely possible that the Kate/Clint fandom has spoiled me.
Because I have gotten used to the utter respect and adoration of Kate Bishop by people in that fandom. Even people who came to the dance because of Clint Barton still fully admit that she is a great human being.
And the fic? Is always full of Kate Being Great and Kate Being an Adult Capable of Making Her Own Choices. Even when the fic is about Clint or from his POV, that is an integral part of the fic. And EVERY SINGLE WEDNESDAY in which Hawkeye comes out, there is a collective “FUCK YEAH, KATE WAS AWESOME IN THIS STORY.”
I’ve never read a genuine Clint/Kate fic where Kate was bashed, her agency taken away, or in anyway was she portrayed as less than she should be. It’s a small fandom, but it’s a great one.
I think that’s why the whole recent sex-shaming blow-up on the Kate and YA tag lately has bothered me so much. I mean, yes, it’s vile, ignorant, sex-shaming bullshit. And yes, I have a personal stake in any argument that claims that there is a “one true way” that a rape victim must behave after her assault. (uh, which is why my commentary has been so full of FUCK YOU)
But really, it’s just so different from the fandom attitude that I grown used to, regarding Kate. It’s so opposite of what Kate deserves.
